Myofascial Pain Syndrome
This is a chronic kind of muscle pain which affects various parts of the body, such as the back and hips. Fascia is a connective tissue which covers and connects a huge amount of structures in the body, including muscles. If muscle and fascia get knotted up together, the area becomes tight and painful. The central area of the knot is most tender and is known as a trigger point. People with fibromyalgia often have myofascial pain too.
Muscle knots are common in healthy people, but those who have myofascial pain syndrome experience it far more frequently, severely, and persistently. Symptoms include:
- Aching muscle pain
- Muscle stiffness
- Joint stiffness
- Limited range of motion
Trigger points can be soothed through massage and a particular technique known as myofascial release. Other treatments involve medications and trigger point injections.
